Indigiqueerness: A Conversation about Storytelling by Joshua Whitehead with Angie Abdou

Evolving from a conversation between Joshua Whitehead and Angie Abdou, Indigiqueerness is part dialogue, part collage, and part memoir. Beginning with memories of his childhood poetry and prose and travelling through the library of his life, Whitehead contemplates the role of theory, Indigenous language, queerness, and fantastical worlds in all his artistic pursuits. This volume is imbued with Whitehead’s energy and celebrates Indigenous writers and creators who defy expectations and transcend genres.

About the Authors

Joshua Whitehead is an Oji-Cree/nehiyaw, Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer member of Peguis First Nation (Treaty 1). He is the author of the bestselling novel Jonny Appleseed (2018), which was longlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award, and won Canada Reads and a Lambda Literary Award; and the poetry col­lection full-metal indigiqueer (2017). In 2016, he won the Governor General’sHistory Award for the Indigenous Arts and Stories Challenge. He is also the editor of Love after the End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Specula­tive Fiction. Whitehead is an Assistant Professor of English and Indigenous Studies at the Uni­versity of Calgary (Treaty 7). He lives in Calgary, Alberta.

Angie Abdou is the author of seven books and co-editor of Writing the Body in Motion: A Critical Anthology on Canadian Sport Literature. Her first novel, The Bone Cage, was a Canada Reads finalist. Her two memoirs on youth sport hit the Canadian best-seller list. Abdou is associate professor of Creative Writing at Athabasca University and a nationally certified swim coach.
